Red Robin is a popular chain restaurant that offers classic American food like burgers, sandwiches and wraps, and has a decent size kids menu. With a family-friendly atmosphere and regular deals for kids items, there’s a good reason that this is a popular restaurant.
If you like Red Robin and have just started a gluten-free diet or have been at it for a while and are looking at what menu items you can order while steering clear of gluten, you’re in the right place.
In this post, we’re digging into the menu at Red Robin, as well as talking about how Red Robin handles food sensitivities and allergies in their kitchen.
Plus we’ll go over the Red Robin allergen promise, and go item-by-item through the Red Robin menu while noting what dishes can be ordered without gluten and how they can be customized to keep all gluten-containing ingredients off your plate.
We’ll also go over some of the basics of where cross contamination comes from in many restaurants as well as some notes about what you can expect from the overall gluten-free experience at Red Robin.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
Gluten is naturally occurring, and therefore is impossible to strip away from the grain. If a grain naturally has gluten in it, there’s no way to make that food gluten-free.
Where can you find gluten in food?
Gluten can be found in the form of wheat and grain products, like bread or flour in the more obvious places.
You can also find gluten as a binding ingredient, an ingredient added for texture like to make a food more crispy, or as a thickening agent.
Where can you find gluten in restaurants?
Depending on the restaurant you’re visiting, you may find gluten in a variety of places.
At restaurants, there will be gluten in hamburger buns, the breading of crispy chicken sandwiches or chicken nuggets, some French fries, salad dressings, croutons on salad, and chili or soup options.
At other restaurants, you’ll find gluten in flour in sauces, in pizza or other pastry dough, pasta, and as a thickener in some soups.
Where gluten is found in the menu items will vary from restaurant to restaurant. That’s why it’s always a good idea to review menus from home, and see if you can find any allergen information before you get to the restaurant itself.
Being able to review nutritional information and allergen statements before visiting a restaurant can be the difference between ordering something that you think is safe for your gluten-free diet and getting sick.
Being knowledgeable about what specific menu items you’ll be able to eat without any worries of later reactions is crucial to sticking with your gluten-free diet.
Red Robin allergen statement
The Red Robin website states in their “Allergen Promise:”
“We pledge to give Guests the confidence to enjoy more of our menu regardless of restrictions. Our Certified Master Allergen Trainers are continually enhancing our program and providing the most current data.
Our kitchens are alerted of every allergen request so dedicated tools can be used to prevent cross contact. The purple pick identifies each allergen-accommodated meal and provides confidence that precautions have been taken.”
What you need to know about eating gluten-free at Red Robin
Red Robin has an interactive website that allows you to view all their menu items using filters for your food allergies and sensitivities.
You can work through the menu before setting foot in their restaurant to help you determine what your choices are on a gluten-free diet and help figure out if this feels like a worthwhile restaurant for you to visit before getting in the car to drive there.
Something else to note about Red Robin and getting gluten-free food is that while the restaurant itself is not completely gluten-free, the staff have been trained to use dedicated tools and surfaces to reduce the instance of cross contamination.
Most of the burger patties, chicken patties, and turkey burgers are all cooked on a shared surface, so keep that in mind when you order. There’s a chance of cross contact at this stage of cooking.
If you tell your server at Red Robin of a sensitivity or allergy, you can find a purple pick on the top of your food. This purple pick shows you that the meal you ordered was made by the kitchen staff with extra care to keep your food separate from other foods containing gluten or other allergens you tell them you need to avoid.
While it’s not a perfect system – hello, they’re still in the same kitchen as tons of burger buns and breaded fried foods, it’s better than many other restaurants who don’t even attempt to keep their foods separate and call them gluten-free.
The last thing to know about Red Robin is that they don’t mind if you customize your order, so for example, if you are looking at a salad that you wish were gluten-free if only the croutons weren’t on it, ask to have the croutons removed and share with your server you’re looking to keep the salad gluten-free.
Don’t be shy in altering your order so you can eat the food that your body needs. This is one restaurant that will accommodate your needs to the best of their ability.
What to know about cross contamination at restaurants
Most restaurants are not considered gluten-free establishments so it’s useful to keep this in mind when making decisions about where to go and what to order.
It’s important to know that even if a restaurant claims that their menu items do not contain gluten, that the possibility and probability of gluten in their products is going to be high if there is even one menu item with gluten available.
Depending on your level of sensitivity to gluten, this can be make or break information for you.
If you are Celiac and are allergic to trace amounts of gluten, you’ll likely want to avoid most restaurants that offer any bread products or French fries that are cooked in a shared fryer with other gluten-containing ingredients.
If you are not sensitive to gluten at the trace level and have adverse reactions to gluten due to a food intolerance, you may decide that these trace amounts of gluten from cross contamination are worth risking for a quick, easy, and convenient food option.
Being aware of how you have reacted to gluten in your diet in the past and how much gluten it takes for your body to react is useful knowledge when it comes to situations like these.
Use your best judgment about what you know about your body, how you react to gluten, and what the risks are for you specifically.
