If you love ice cream and have been following a dairy-free diet for any amount of time, you may have been worried about finding an option that you love. After all, ice cream can be a big deal to some people.
Don’t worry – if you’re avoiding dairy in your diet, there ARE choices for you! Of course, you can always make your own dairy-free ice cream at home. But if you are interested in buying a pint over buying an ice cream maker, you’re in the right place.
In this post, we’re going to talk all about dairy-free ice cream, what it’s made of, plus go over all the terms you’re likely to find on the containers and how to decipher them for your diet.
What is ice cream made of?
Traditional ice cream is made using cow’s milk, cream, sugar, and flavorings. It is churned into ice cream using an ice cream maker and can be enjoyed with minimal flavorings, or have loads of swirls, sprinkles, cookies, brownies, cake, spices, fruit, nuts, and chocolate added to it.
If you can dream it up, you can probably add it to ice cream!
Is ice cream dairy-free?
Traditional ice cream is made using cow’s milk, so it is not safe for a dairy-free diet.
What are your options for dairy-free ice cream?
If you follow a dairy-free diet, your best options are to make your own dairy-free ice cream at home or find a brand and flavor you love from the grocery store.
I’ll be the first to admit that dairy-free ice cream can be expensive all around, which is why after I dipped my toe in the world of buying dairy-free ice cream for many years, I finally bought an ice cream maker attachment for my stand mixer.
Having an ice cream maker at home is nice, because I can control the quality – and cost – of ingredients.
However, it does require some forethought, because I have to make sure I have all the ingredients on hand, and freeze the attachment the day before. It’s not something I can do on a whim, but requires a little bit of preparation.

What is dairy-free ice cream made out of?
Dairy-free ice cream can be made out of a variety of different base ingredients. The most common are any dairy-free milks you see on the market these days. Coconut, soy, rice, almond, and cashew milks are all common base ingredients for dairy-free ice cream.
However, as I was rounding up this list of brands and flavors for this blog post, I’ve found that manufacturers are getting more and more creative with how to make dairy-free ice cream.
Some new-to-me ideas are avocado, aqua faba (liquid from cooked chickpeas, and pea protein as bases for ice cream. Basically, companies are looking for ways to accommodate folks on a dairy-free diet, and they’re going to any length in order to do it!
It’s a win-win in my book! I’m all for someone being creative while I get to try all their delicious creations. I’ll be on standby with my spoon for some taste testing!
What’s the difference between “non-dairy” and “dairy-free?”
One thing that you’ll notice if you find yourself looking through the frozen dessert aisle at your grocery store while looking for dairy-free ice cream is the labels. You’ll notice that some of these frozen treats have different names, and probably wonder why.
What do they all mean? What should you look for if you follow a dairy-free diet?
Let’s go through some of the popular terms you’ll find on dairy-free ice cream containers and decipher them one by one.
Dairy-free
Dairy-free means that there are no dairy products in the ice cream whatsoever, or at least we would hope.
Unfortunately, the FDA does not have any regulations around the use of the term “dairy-free” on any product. So we can’t be certain if an ice cream is truly free of dairy when we see this term.
That said, the FDA states that labeling must be truthful, and it is understood that the term “dairy-free’ means free of any milk or dairy products when it is used.
Non-dairy
You’ll find “non-dairy” on a lot of ice cream options, but does that mean that it’s truly dairy-free?
Believe it or not, a product labeled “non-dairy” can still contain dairy and milk. The label of “non- dairy” as determined by the FDA means that a product can contain 0.5% or less milk by weight, in the form of casein or casineates.
This means that even if you’d assume that “non- dairy” means “dairy-free,” it’s not always the case. Dairy- free means zero dairy in a product, whereas non-dairy may or not mean it contains dairy.
Some brands use these interchangeably, and many times you’ll see both of them on one package.
If you find a product with either “dairy-free” or “non-dairy” on a package or container of ice cream, it’s still worth it to check ingredient lists for any hidden ingredients that may contain dairy. Due your due diligence, because it’s not required for any company to hold up to any standard when using the “dairy-free” term.
Vegan
When you see the term “vegan” on a pint of ice cream, this means the ice cream or frozen dessert contains no dairy or other animal products, including milk, cream, or even eggs and honey.
If you find an ice cream with a “vegan” label, you’ll know it’s also dairy-free and safe for your dairy-free diet.
Frozen Dessert
According to the FDA, whenever the term “ice cream” is used on a product, it means that it has to contain a certain amount of milkfat and milk solids. That’s why when you shop for dairy-free ice cream, you really don’t find products called “dairy-free ice cream.”
You’re more likely to find these products under the name of “frozen dessert.” Since these products don’t have dairy products or a certain level of milkfat and milk solids, they made up a new name: frozen dessert.
This helps folks like us who are looking for a dairy-free frozen treat find them, without the companies violating the FDA’s regulations.
Nice Cream
Nice cream is another name like “frozen dessert” that’s used to help dairy-free and vegan folks find treats without using the name of “ice cream” and getting into trouble with the FDA.
Nice cream is often used to imply it’s a healthier alternative to ice cream. I’ve seen this term used when bananas, coconut milk, or pea protein are used for ice cream.
When you’re out looking for a treat, know that “ice cream” won’t likely be the first term you find. Instead look for a dairy-free or non-dairy frozen dessert. Then be sure to read the ingredients lists for any hidden ingredients that may contain dairy before buying.
Non-dairy and Dairy-free Ice Cream Brands
The list below is full of frozen desserts that we like to call ice cream, even if they aren’t made of any dairy products at all.
These different brands use all kinds of different bases, so try one or try a number of them to find a flavor and brand that you can come back to time and time again for you to get your sweet tooth satisfied!
If you’re looking for a delicious dairy-free ice cream option, check out one of these brands and flavors. Since I also avoid gluten and you might too, I’ve noted the gluten-free flavors with an asterisk (*).
Look for one of these brands next time you’re scouring the aisles at your local grocery store or health food store. Some of the companies will also ship directly to your home if you’re looking for something special!
