Chex mix is one of my favorite Christmas snacks. It always takes me back to when I was a kid when I have a handful of Chex Mix.
I have fond memories of sitting on my grandparent’s couch grabbing bite by bite of Chex mix from the little serving dish that was right next to me at Christmas dinners, while my mom was telling me to stop snacking so I’d eat my dinner.
Chex Mix has gained so much popularity from when I was a kid that it seems like kind of a commodity now.
You can buy it bagged from the store – which honestly, holds no candle to the homemade stuff. You can even find it in different flavors, and I can see the appeal… something a little different so you don’t get too bored of the same thing.
If you visit the Chex website, they seem to have Chex Mix flavors and varieties for just about any day of the week, including different holidays throughout the year.
It’s great that people have gotten so creative with it, but to be honest, it’s just not for me.
For me, Chex Mix is all about the basic recipe and only enjoying it around Christmas and the holiday season. I mean what is Christmas if it’s not remembering your mom burn her arms on the oven grates while trying to stir the Chex Mix while it was still inside the oven?!

The thing about Chex Mix is that it’s not gluten-free and definitely not dairy-free. Which means that for years, I went without this festive holiday snack. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I tried recreating the classic recipe – without the gluten and the dairy.
Can you guess how hard it was?!
Not really at all.
The four main swaps to make original Chex Mix into a gluten and dairy-free recipe were:
- Use only the gluten-free Chex cereals – that means omitting the wheat variety
- Swapping the butter in the recipe for Earth Balance vegan butter
- Swapping the regular pretzels for gluten-free pretzels
- Omitting the bagel chips
This gluten and dairy-free Chex mix recipe is:
- Crunchy
- Perfectly salty
- Nutty
- Snackable
- Delicious
- Easy to eat the entire batch alone
The fact that it’s that easy should mean that I wasn’t super intimidated to try it on my own for years…. But that’s not the case.
In the past two years, I’ve made this gluten and dairy-free recipe and it’s been a hit in my house. We like to enjoy it while watching Christmas movies, and I definitely set some out to snack throughout the day on Christmas Eve. It’s really just a classic Christmas snack that everyone seems to enjoy.
You can enjoy this snack mix on the go too – it’s great for road trips or gluten-free camping trips too.
I sometimes like to cut this recipe in half, just so that we don’t have too much on hand at any one time… the truth is that I’ll eat my weight in this stuff if I’m not paying attention.
So I try to be mindful of that and halve the recipe once in a while. I’ll include both recipes for the full batch and half batch amounts below.
You can make yours in the oven or in the microwave – and yep, I almost always will make my Chex Mix in the microwave, because hey, my mom’s got scars from the oven for all those woopsy moments from my childhood.
I don’t need to repeat that – and it’s so much faster and easier to use the microwave anyway. Quicker rewards with less time? Yes please!
Don’t let being gluten-free or dairy-free keep you from making it at home too!
