What are hot dogs?
Hot dogs are a type of sausage otherwise known as a wiener, frankfurter, or frank. They can be made with any different type of meat, usually meat trimmings from beef, pork, chicken, or turkey.
Hot dogs are most commonly served in a bun that’s made specifically for hot dogs, long and skinny. Some people call hot dogs sandwiches, others say they’re just simply hot dogs.
Hot dogs are a quintessential summer grilling and barbecue food, as they can be cooked outdoors on grills on hot days without ever needing to heat up the kitchen. Hot dogs are also considered a “kid food” as so many kids enjoy them.
Many people cut up hot dogs to put into macaroni and cheese or other pasta, and some folks use hot dogs in casseroles or top theirs with chili. There really are a number of uses for this food, so whatever way you enjoy them, it’s the right way!
What are hot dogs made from?
Hot dogs are made from a variety of different ingredients especially between brands, but the common denominator is that they’re usually made from the meat trimmings of beef, pork, chicken, or turkey.
Let’s have a look at the ingredients in three different popular brands of hot dogs that you can buy from the grocery store to help us get a better idea of what many hot dogs are made of.
Ingredients in Nathan’s Famous skinless beef franks

What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
Gluten is naturally occurring, and therefore is impossible to strip away from the grain. If a grain naturally has gluten in it, there’s no way to make that food gluten-free.
Gluten can be found in foods in obvious ways, or in more hidden ways, like in binders or fillers. Even in meat products, like hot dogs, you can sometimes find gluten.
Are hot dogs gluten-free?
Hot dogs can be gluten-free, and some can contain gluten. It’s not easy to say that all hot dogs are safe for a gluten-free diet, because some brands contain binders and fillers with gluten ingredients.
When you follow a gluten-free diet, your best bet is to review a list of brands of gluten-free hot dogs (like the one here in this post!) and always look for a gluten-free label on the packaging before buying.
Some hot dogs have a gluten-free label while others have no gluten ingredients and still don’t have a label. If you are extremely sensitive to gluten or have an allergy, you’ll want to avoid anything without a gluten-free label.
If you can handle trace amounts of gluten, you may be okay with these brands, but you’ll want to do so “at your own risk.”
