What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
You can find gluten in whole grains, but also in many processed foods as well. If you purchase wheat bread, there will be gluten in it, because wheat by nature has gluten.

Are Oreos gluten-free?
Based on what we know about wheat and gluten, we can be sure that classic Oreos contain gluten and are not gluten-free. Since they have enriched wheat flour in the cookie shells, these aren’t a safe choice if you’re following a gluten-free diet.
As of January 2021, gluten-free Oreos are now available! You can find them at many grocery stores throughout the US.

Gluten-free Oreo Ingredients
Here is the full list of gluten-free Oreo ingredients as indicated on their packaging:
Sugar, White Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Palm Oil, Canola Oil, Whole Oat Flour, Cornstarch, Cocoa (processed with alkali), Invert Sugar, Soy Lecithin, Baking Soda, Salt, Xanthan Gum, Chocolate, Artificial Flavor.
Do Gluten-free Oreos taste like classic Oreos?
I picked up a package of these new gluten-free Oreos along with a package of classic Oreos for my family. The new Oreos taste just like the real thing to me, and after having my husband and son do a taste-test, they said they couldn’t tell the difference between the two.
Score! Oreo lovers can now enjoy these famous cookies on a gluten-free diet!
The best part for me is the price. I was comparing prices between these gluten-free Oreos and another popular brand at my local grocery store. The other brand was $6.99, while the gluten-free Oreos were only $3.50 per package.
The packaging of gluten-free Oreos is smaller than a classic package of the same cookies, but I think this outweighs having to pay double for the same thing from another brand.
Are gluten-free Oreos dairy-free?
Believe it or not, traditional Oreos are dairy-free, and lucky for us folks who also avoid dairy, their gluten-free Oreos are too!
If you avoid both gluten and dairy, you can enjoy these delicious cookies in your diet. Woohoo – finally!
Where can I buy gluten-free Oreos?
I was able to buy gluten-free Oreos at my local grocery store, Fred Meyer (which is a Kroger store in the Pacific Northwest), so I assume you can also get them at other Kroger stores.
As time goes on, I’m sure they’ll roll out in more stores nationwide. I’ve seen big buzz online around these cookies, so keep an eye out locally for them.
If you just can’t wait to try them, you can order them through Amazon, although they are extremely price inflated.
