What is cream of mushroom soup?
Cream of mushroom soup is a soup with a creamy texture and has mushrooms as the main ingredient, either in pieces or pureed entirely into the soup.
This soup generally has a thick and almost gravy-like flavor and texture.
Cream of mushroom soup is full of earthy flavor from the mushrooms and creamy from a combination of a roux (butter and flour) and milk or cream and/or vegetable or mushroom broth.
What is cream of mushroom soup used for?
Cream of mushroom soup is often used in casseroles, in crockpot meals, sauces for meatballs or other hearty dinners, and even potato dishes.
Cream of mushroom soup can be enjoyed on its own too for a hearty and earthy meal that’s perfect in the fall and winter months.
Many people use cream of mushroom soup in their Thanksgiving green bean casserole or other casserole dishes for a thick and creamy consistency that helps bind ingredients together.

Cream of mushroom soup ingredients
Depending on the brand that you buy or if you make cream of mushroom soup at home from scratch, the ingredients will vary.
If you’re buying a store-bought cream of mushroom soup, you might buy one of these popular brands: Campbell’s, Progresso, or Knorr.
Let’s look at the ingredients of some of these popular cream of mushroom soup options.
Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup ingredients:
“Water, mushrooms, canola or soybean oil, wheat flour, cream, cornstarch, salt, modified milk ingredients, soy protein isolate, monosodium glutamate, tomato paste, spice extract, barley yeast extract and dehydrated garlic.”

Knorr cream of mushroom soup mix ingredients:

What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
Gluten is naturally occurring, and therefore is impossible to strip away from the grain. If a grain naturally has gluten in it, there’s no way to make that food gluten-free.
Gluten can be found in some cereal products in the form of wheat, wheat flour, malt flavor, or malt barley.
Is cream of mushroom soup gluten-free?
When most people think of cream of mushroom soup, it’s usually the stuff that comes in a can from the grocery store. Campbell’s brand of cream of mushroom soup is what comes to mind for me.
Most traditional cream of mushroom soups you’ll find that are store-bought OR homemade are not gluten-free.
You’ll need to make some substitutions in order to make this soup gluten-free. The exception here is the Progresso soup that we listed ingredients for above. That brand of cream of mushroom soup is gluten-free.
Can you make your own gluten-free cream of mushroom soup?
You can easily make your own cream of mushroom soup at home without any gluten. Use gluten-free flour for the roux and be sure any broth you use is also gluten-free.

Is cream of mushroom soup dairy-free?
Traditionally, cream of mushroom soup is not dairy-free, as it includes cream or milk in some form or another.
You can definitely make cream of mushroom soup to be dairy-free by swapping out milk or cream for a dairy-free milk.
In my own recipe, I like to use coconut milk to replace the cow’s milk because it is thick and rich. Oat milk or cashew milk would also work well to create dairy-free cream of mushroom soup at home.
