What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
You can find gluten in whole grains, but also in many processed foods as well. If you purchase wheat bread, there will be gluten in it, because wheat by nature has gluten.
Many processed foods have hidden gluten in them in the form of gluten or wheat derivatives. These are used as flavorings, binders to keep ingredients together, or other additives.
What are the ingredients in Kraft Jet Puffed Marshmallows?
Depending on the variety of Jet-Puffed marshmallows you opt to buy, the ingredients may differ slightly. Here are the ingredients in one of their most popular products, their Jumbo Everyday marshmallows:
“Corn syrup, sugar, dextrose, water, modified cornstarch, gelatin, contains less than 2% of tetrasodium pyrophosphate (whipping aid), natural and artificial flavor, blue 1.”
Are marshmallows gluten-free?
While many marshmallows are gluten-free and don’t contain any gluten at all, some marshmallows do contain gluten.
In many ingredient lists for marshmallows, you might find wheat protein, wheat starch, or glucose syrup – all of these are hidden names of gluten, and without the knowledge of which names to look for, you might not know they are gluten-containing ingredients at all!
The easiest way to know if a certain brand of marshmallow is gluten-free is to look for a gluten-free label.
Of course, if the marshmallow package you’re looking at doesn’t have a gluten-free label on the front, you can read the ingredient list to look for the hidden sources of gluten. Find out how to read ingredient lists.
You’ll find that some brands of marshmallows contain hidden sources of gluten, while others don’t have a gluten-free label on the package but still contain no gluten-containing ingredients.
