Yogurt is such a popular breakfast food in American culture, and for good reason. It’s full of protein, fat, and can keep you full for a long time. It’s great on its own plain, with granola, or used as a topping or even baking substitute in some recipes.
If you’re just getting started with a gluten-free diet or have been at it for a while, you may be wondering if yogurt is safe to enjoy. In this post, we’ll talk about what yogurt is and if it’s gluten-free.
We’ll also go over a list of gluten-free yogurt brands you can look for at the store, plus answer questions about some popular brands and how they fit into a gluten-free diet.
What is yogurt?
Yogurt is a fermented food made with milk and a yogurt culture. Yogurt is usually made with cow’s milk, but can also be made with other types of dairy-free milks, like coconut milk, almond milk, cashew milk, and others.
Yogurt is generally enjoyed in the US as a breakfast food either plain, with granola, or in yogurt parfaits. Yogurt is sold both in plain and flavored varieties, the most popular being fruit or vanilla flavors.
You can enjoy yogurt as a replacement for sour cream in many dishes due to its signature tangy flavor from the fermentation.
Yogurt is popular in many cultures, because of its high protein content and unique tart flavor. You’ll find yogurt in dishes with both sweet and savory flavor profiles. It really is a versatile ingredient!

What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
Gluten is naturally occurring, yet many people have a hard time digesting it as well as having immune responses to it when it enters their system. Many people who experience side effects from eating gluten have either celiac disease or a food intolerance, and choose to avoid gluten entirely in their diets.
Is yogurt gluten-free?
Yogurt is naturally gluten-free as long as no gluten ingredients have been added to the product. Many popular yogurt brands share a gluten-free statement about their yogurts, so you can feel good about eating this food on a gluten-free diet.
While it’s not too common to add gluten directly into the yogurt, some brands offer yogurt and granola combination packages. The granola may contain gluten and by sharing the same facility, there’s an increased risk of gluten cross contamination.
It’s a good idea to look for a gluten-free label on the yogurt that you buy to ensure that the option you choose is safe for your diet. If you can’t find a label, you can review ingredients lists, but know that there could be a risk of cross contamination.

Is Greek yogurt gluten-free?
Greek yogurt is just like other yogurt in that it doesn’t contain any gluten ingredients. Since Greek yogurt is simply traditional yogurt that has been strained of the whey producing a thicker consistency than regular yogurt. This food can be assumed to always be gluten-free, just like other yogurt.
That said, it doesn’t hurt to look for a gluten-free label on the Greek yogurt that you’re purchasing to just be certain.
Similarly to other yogurt products, be sure that you’re buying Greek yogurt without any mix-ins or toppings as well. That’s where gluten is most likely to show up, in granola or other mix-ins that come with cups of yogurt.
Is yogurt dairy-free?
Most yogurt contains dairy as it’s made from cow’s milk. If you follow a dairy-free diet, you’ll want to look for a dairy-free yogurt that’s made with dairy-free milk. Find a list of brands of dairy-free yogurt on this post.
