Do you love to make pancakes on the weekends and enjoy getting a little help from the convenience of a premade mix? If so, you’re not alone!
Kodiak Cakes is a popular brand of pancake and waffle mix that’s in just about every grocery store I’ve set foot in over the past few years. They’re said to have tons of protein, which makes them appealing for folks who know that pancakes are often very carb-heavy and don’t fill you up for long after eating them.
With a few great recipes on the back of the box, you can even make muffins, brownies, and cookies. One of my son’s favorite recipes is the sheet pan pancakes. I love making a batch of these for him and freezing them for quick and easy breakfasts to reheat on weekdays.
If you’re following a gluten-free diet, you may have wondered if this brand of pancake mix is going to work for you. Are Kodiak Cakes gluten-free? Which varieties are safe for you if you’re avoiding gluten? And what are some other options of gluten-free pancake mix if you can’t find what Kodiak Cakes has to offer?
We’ll answer all these questions in this post – and more. Let’s get into it!

What makes Kodiak Cakes unique is that they are promoted as being high in protein. Their mixes often include whey protein or pea protein. With the addition of milk or eggs to their pancake and waffle recipes on the back of the box, the final product can contain up to 14 grams of protein per serving.

Kodiak Cakes Ingredients
Since there are so many different products available from Kodiak Cakes, let’s have a quick look through the ingredients of their most popular product: their Buttermilk Power Cakes Flapjack & Waffle MIx. Included in this product are these ingredients:
“100% whole grain wheat flour, 100% whole grain oat flour, vital wheat gluten, whey protein concentrate, brown sugar, wheat protein isolate, milk protein concentrate, leavening (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate), buttermilk, sea salt.”
What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape. You can create a malt from any of these grains.
Gluten is naturally occurring, and therefore is impossible to strip away from the grain. If a grain naturally has gluten in it, there’s no way to make that food gluten-free.
Are Kodiak Cakes gluten-free?
When we’re talking about “Kodiak Cakes,” my mind goes to the most popular option – their Buttermilk Power Cakes made from theri Flapjack and Waffle Mix. This mix is not gluten-free as it contains 100% whole grain wheat flour, wheat protein isolate, and vital wheat gluten.
Kodiak Cakes does offer a gluten-free options, so don’t discount this brand entirely if you’re on a gluten-free diet.
Which products from Kodiak Cakes are gluten-free?
Kodiak Cakes offers their Frontier Oat Gluten-free Flapjack & Waffle Mix and their Gluten-free Frontier Oat Power Waffles for folks who are trying to stick with a gluten-free diet.
Their Gluten-free Buttermilk & Maple Flapjack Cup plus two of their syrups (Mountain Berry and Raspberry) are also considered gluten-free.
These are the ingredients in the Frontier Gluten-free Flapjack & Waffle Mix:
“Gluten-free 100% whole grain oat flour, brown sugar, tapioca starch, leavening (monocalcium phosphate, baking soda), eggs, sea salt, xanthan gum).”
These are the ingredients in the Frontier Oat Power Waffles:
“Water, 100% whole grain oat flour, canola and/or sunflower and/or soybean oil, brown granulated sugar, egg, tapioca starch, whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, sunflower and/or soy and/or canola lecithin, natural flavor, baking powder (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate, white rice flour), rice protein, pea protein, sea salt, guar gum.”
Are Kodiak Cakes dairy-free?
Kodiak Cakes are not considered dairy-free, as most of their products contain whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, and/or buttermilk.
The brand does carry a Plant-Based option of their Flapjack and Waffle Mix, which contains the following ingredients:
“100% whole grain wheat flour, 100% whole grain oat flour, cane sugar, pea protein, brown rice protein, baking powder (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, corn starch, monocalcium phosphate), vital wheat gluten, wheat protein isolate, natural flavor, sea salt.”
Though as you can see, their plant-based option does contain gluten, so this wouldn’t be a good choice if you’re following a gluten-free diet.
Their Frontier Gluten-free Flapjack & Waffle Mix does have notes on the packaging that you can use a milk substitute, so you can actually make their products gluten and dairy-free if you avoid both of these in your diet.
