What is the difference between non-alcoholic beer and beer with alcohol?

The difference between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers is usually how the alcohol is brewed. The fermentation process may be shorter to stop the alcohol from ever reaching a point for it to be considered an alcoholic beverage.

This is similar to the way that kombucha can contain alcohol if it is left to ferment long enough, but in most options you find at the store, the manufactureres stop the fermentation process long before they get to the point where alcohol is present.

Another way that beer might be made to be non-alcoholic is to heat the beer that contains alcohol to “burn off” the alcohol. Essentially, the alcohol evaporates and leaves the flavor of the beer behind.

What is non-alcoholic beer made from?

Beer that is non-alcoholic or low alcohol is made using the same ingredients as a normal beer would. These ingredients include water, malt, hops, and yeast.

Other flavorings, fruits, and spices can be added to give a unique flavor profile, but at its most basic, these are the only ingredients you need to make non-alcoholic beer.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.

Gluten is naturally occurring, and therefore is impossible to strip away from the grain. If a grain naturally has gluten in it, there’s no way to make that food gluten-free.

Is there gluten in non-alcoholic beer?

A lot of non-alcoholic beers do contain gluten, because they are made with the same ingredients as beer with alcohol.

There are some brands that do offer gluten-free options for folks who avoid alcohol. Oftentimes these beers are made with gluten-free grains instead of malted barley which is usually used in the beer making process.

Some brands may even make beer then “remove” the gluten like they might remove the alcohol. In this method, gluten is removed by using an enzyme that helps to break down the gluten protein to the point where the levels of gluten that are left in the beer are considered low enough to be considered “gluten-free.”

That said, many folks who avoid gluten still have issues with gluten removed beer, so keep this in mind before buying them.
