These frostings will help you create gluten and dairy-free cakes that are both impressive and delicious and you don’t even have to lift a finger to make it from scratch.

Before we get into the brands, let’s go over  a few details about frosting that you might need to know if you’re on a dairy free diet.

Does frosting have dairy?

The answer to that is “yes!” Most frosting brands that you buy at the store and most homemade frosting recipes are made using butter, which is a dairy product, because it comes from animal milk.

So if you’re not looking for a specific dairy-free frosting, know that most frosting is not safe for a dairy-free diet.

Is frosting vegan?

 A lot of people who are on a dairy-free diet may also avoid eggs and other animal products, making them vegan.

So the answer to this question is “no.” If you’re using a traditional pre-made frosting you would find at a grocery store, most won’t be vegan.

However, those that I’m outlining in this list ARE vegan, so keep on reading.

Is Duncan Hines frosting vegan?

Yes, many flavors of Duncan Hines Creamy Homestyle frosting is considered vegan as it doesn’t contain any dairy products or other animal products. If you follow a vegan diet, you can feel comfortable enjoying this frosting.

Be sure to choose a flavor that doesn’t obviously contain dairy products – like cream cheese.

#2. Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Frosting and Funfetti Frostings

Most Pillsbury frostings contain no dairy ingredients. This brand was a surprise to me after I had long thought it contained dairy!

My husband brought it home one day after preparing for my son to bake me a cake for Mother’s Day, and said “hey, you missed a brand on your frosting post.”

Apparently my husband references my blog for items that are safe for me while at the store – ha! After doing some digging, it is clear he was right!

All of the Pillsbury frostings have no dairy ingredients as they’re listed on their website. Be sure to check the ingredients lists on the packaging before buying as Pillsbury historically has had dairy products in their frostings.

But the Creamy Supreme, Pastry Bag frosting, and Funfetti frostings all seem to be both gluten and dairy-free! Woohoo!

Is Icing dairy-free? Is icing vegan?

We know that some frosting brands are dairy-free as we’ve discussed here, but what about icing? Icing is what’s used to decorate a cake after it’s been frosted.

Betty Crocker and Wilton brands both offer dairy-free and vegan icing options. I found that most icings were dairy-free, but not necessarily vegan as many of them have eggs.

Betty Crocker has a number of dairy-free and vegan icing options, which you can search for what specific product you’re looking into on the Allergen Inside website.
