Many processed foods have hidden gluten in them in the form of gluten or wheat derivatives. These are used as flavorings, binders to keep ingredients together, or other additives.
What are the ingredients in Philadelphia Cream Cheese?
The ingredients found in Philadelphia Original flavor of cream cheese according to the Philadelphia website are:
“Pasteurized milk and cream, whey protein concentrate, whey, salt, carob bean gum, natamycin (a natural mold inhibitor), vitamin A palmitate, cheese culture.”
There is also a note on the packaging stating that this product “contains: milk.”
Is Philadelphia Cream Cheese gluten-free?
According to the Philadelphia Cream Cheese website on their FAQ page, “Yes, Philadelphia cream cheese is considered gluten-free.”
You can feel good about enjoying this product on a gluten-free diet.
That said, this might be obvious but be sure that what you’re spreading cream cheese on or using in baked goods also contain gluten-free ingredients. Bagels and other products made with regular flour contain gluten.
If you want to stick with a gluten-free diet, choose a gluten-free bagel to spread your cream cheese on. And be sure to have a specific tub of cream cheese for folks in your family that can eat gluten and a separate tub for folks who cannot keep the possibility of gluten cross contamination low.
