Thanksgiving is right around the corner and if you’re like me, you’re looking for the best recipes to serve at your family’s gathering. Whether you’re just getting started with a gluten-free diet or you’ve been at it a while, Thanksgiving can be tricky to navigate no matter where you are on your gluten-free journey.
With so much food and so many options on a Thanksgiving table, sticking with your gluten-free diet, or in my case gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free diet, can feel like a tricky puzzle to solve.
Luckily, I’ve done my fair share of hosting my own Thanksgiving events, as well as bringing my own dishes to family events at others’ homes, so I feel pretty well versed in navigating holiday food with food intolerances.
In this post, we’re going to go deep into stuffing. We’ll talk about how to make gluten-free stuffing, what your store-bought options are, make-ahead ideas, freezing and storing, and how you can still enjoy this delicious comfort food at Thanksgiving or any time of year while sticking with your gluten-free diet.
Before we get into that, let’s go over some basics, so we’re on the same page as it relates to stuffing.
Is stuffing gluten-free?
Most traditional stuffing recipes are not gluten-free, as they use wheat or white bread made with wheat flour.
Does stuffing have dairy?
While stuffing isn’t a dish with a lot of dairy, it is usually made with butter, a dairy product. If you follow a dairy-free diet, you’ll want to make substitutions for this in your recipe.
Read on: Does bread have dairy?
Does stuffing have eggs?
Many stuffing recipes have eggs in them, and they act as a binding ingredient to keep the bread cubes and the rest of the dish together. There may also be eggs as an ingredient in the bread that you use.
Now that we’re on the same page as it relates to food intolerances, let’s talk about what swaps we can make to make stuffing gluten, dairy, and egg-free.
How to make stuffing gluten-free
To make any stuffing recipe gluten-free, you’ll want to be sure you use gluten-free bread, and that there is no added gluten in any broth or stock you use if you use a store-bought option.
How to make stuffing dairy-free
If you are also following a dairy-free diet, you can easily make your stuffing recipe dairy-free by swapping butter in your recipe for vegan butter. You can also use coconut oil or another oil of your choice, but I personally prefer the flavor of the vegan butter in this dish.
You’ll also want to be sure that the bread you’re using doesn’t contain any dairy products.
How to make stuffing egg-free
To make your stuffing egg-free, you can find a substitution to mimic the binder that the egg provides in a recipe with a flax egg or an egg substitute.
However, I find that the egg in many recipes doesn’t provide much necessity, except for the golden color when the stuffing is baked and the binding. I make my stuffing without any eggs at all, and it turns out to be just as delicious as recipes that use eggs.
You’ll also want to check the gluten-free bread that you use for the bread cubes in your stuffing.
Store-bought gluten-free stuffing mixes
If you’re reading this post and wishing you had a store-bought option to make your life easier around the busy holidays, I’ve got you covered. I’ve done a little research and found four great gluten-free stuffing mixes that you’ll only have to add a few ingredients to in order to get a delicious stuffing to your holiday table with less effort.
Aleia’s Gluten-free Foods Stuffing Mix
This stuffing mix is gluten-free and gets prepared in the same way you would a Stove Top style stuffing mix. You mix it up with some liquid and can serve it off the stove or bake it in the oven. You can find this stuffing mix in both plain and savory flavors.
This mix is gluten-free, but does contain both dairy and eggs.
Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Stuffing Mix
Trader Joe’s offers a delicious gluten-free stuffing mix with onions, mushrooms, and celery. This mix can be prepared on the stovetop, in the oven, or stuffed in your bird.
This mix is gluten-free, but not dairy or egg-free.
Three Bakers Herb Seasoned Whole Grain Gluten-Free Stuffing
The Three Bakers Herb Gluten-free Seasoned Whole Grain Stuffing Mix is a great option if you’re gluten-free and looking for a quick and easy stuffing option. This mix requires only water and you can make it on the stove top, oven, or even in the microwave.
This stuffing mix is gluten-free and dairy-free, but does contain eggs.
Williams Sonoma Gluten-Free Stuffing
Williams-Sonoma offers a gluten-free stuffing mix option that has onions and herbs. You can get it in their stores and online when around the Thanksgiving holiday.
This stuffing mix is gluten-free and dairy-free, but does contain eggs.
Other brands and products I’ve heard offer a gluten-free stuffing mix, but I haven’t been able to confirm:
- Live G Free
- Whole Foods
- Sprouts

How to make gluten-free stuffing
Ready to make your own gluten-free stuffing at home? Make a delicious stuffing at home following these steps.
Prepare the oven and baking dish
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a 9″ x 12″ glass baking dish by spraying with cooking oil or coating with vegan butter.
Prepare the bread cubes
Cut the gluten-free bread into cubes. Place the bread cubes in a single even layer on a rimmed baking sheet.
Transfer the baking sheet with bread cubes to the oven to bake for 5 to 7 minutes, turning once during the cooking time, about halfway through. You’ll know they’re done when the bread has become dry and slightly toasted. Set aside and allow to cool.
Prepare the vegetables
While the bread is cooling, prepare a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add one tablespoon vegan butter to the pan. Once the vegan butter has melted, reserve half and set aside. Add the onion and celery to the melted butter in the skillet. Saute for 7 to 10 minutes, or until softened.
Combine ingredients
Once the bread has cooled, transfer to a large bowl. Add the sauteed onions and celery to the bowl. Pour the melted butter over the toasted bread and vegetables.
Add the chicken or vegetable stock, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper.
Mix stuffing ingredients together
Mix together with a spoon until all the ingredients are well incorporated and the bread is well-coated.
Bake stuffing
Spread the stuffing into an even layer into your prepared baking dish. Cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and serve
Remove from the oven and serve with your favorite Thanksgiving dishes or other entree.

Tips for making gluten-free stuffing
When it comes to making any dish homemade and entirely from scratch, you want to be sure you have good quality ingredients.
Choose a good quality gluten-free bread that tastes good on its own, has a decent texture, and you’d eat on its own.
If you avoid dairy or eggs, be sure to find a bread that also is free of those ingredients. Schar is gluten, dairy, and egg-free according to their website.
I’m using poultry seasoning as a shortcut for dried herbs to make this dish even quicker to put together. However, if you prefer the flavors of fresh herbs in your stuffing, feel free to use minced sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Can I use turkey drippings instead of broth?
Absolutely! If you have leftover turkey drippings from cooking up your turkey, feel free to use them in place of or in addition to your broth. Make sure that the drippings aren’t burned before adding them, as the stuffing will take on whatever flavor you add to it.
Can I add sausage to gluten-free stuffing?
Of course! If you love sausage, apples, mushrooms, nuts, or any other ingredients that aren’t in this recipe, feel free to add to it! I love sausage in my stuffing, but not all of my family enjoys it.
You’ll want to be aware of how much additional liquid comes from each additional ingredient you add, so you can be sure to add less liquid from the chicken or vegetable stock to make up for the difference.
Can I make this gluten-free stuffing ahead of time?
You can definitely make this recipe head of time. You can make the bread cubes a few days ahead of time, chop the vegetables the day before, and assemble and bake the day you want to eat it.
You can also make the entire dish a day or two before serving, if you wish. All you need to do is take it out of the refrigerator for about 15 minutes before serving to reheat again in the oven.
How to freeze stuffing
This recipe is freezer-friendly if you store it in an airtight container. This is great for keeping leftovers. All you need to do is reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 15 to 20 minutes until warm, or in the microwave.
