What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
You can find gluten in whole grains, but also in many processed foods as well. If you purchase wheat bread, there will be gluten in it, because wheat by nature has gluten.
Many processed foods have hidden gluten in them in the form of gluten or wheat derivatives. These are also in the form of flavorings, binders to keep ingredients together, or other additives.
Are French fried onions gluten-free?
The traditional French fried onions you’d find in a can at the grocery store usually contain gluten. The most common brand, French’s, contains “Onions, Palm Oil, Wheat Flour, Salt and Dextrose” according to their website.
Most other brands of French fried onions also use wheat in their ingredients list making them not gluten-free.

Are French fried onions dairy-free?
The French’s brand of French fried onions are dairy-free, as there are no dairy ingredients listed in the ingredients list.
If you can eat gluten but not dairy, you are safe to enjoy these.
Can I buy gluten-free French fried onions?
You can! I have looked around online and in stores and found a few places that carry gluten-free French fried onions. Your best bet is to look around Thanksgiving as this when you’re most likely to find them.
If you can’t find them locally at grocery stores, look on Amazon or a Sprouts store.
