If you love peanut butter and need a new favorite brand for your gluten-free diet, this post is for you.
What is peanut butter made from?
Peanut butter is usually made from ground peanuts, and sometimes added oil, sugar or other sweetener, and salt. Some brands of peanut butter add other ingredients, like corn syrup, soy protein, and other preservatives.
While most of us can agree that peanut butter should be made from just one ingredient – peanuts, many manufacturers don’t include just one ingredient.
You can find brands with many ingredients for sweetening, adding protein, and preservatives for keeping it shelf stable for a very long time.
Your best bet with just about any food, and with peanut butter is to look for the option with the shortest ingredient list. This will ensure it’s as close to nature as you can find it, meaning it won’t contain a lot of extra ingredients that have the potential to have hidden gluten.

What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in most wheat products, and acts as the “glue” that helps to hold wheat, barley, kamut, spelt, farro, durum, bulgur, rye, and semolina together to maintain their shape.
Gluten can also be found in many processed foods as additives, binders, and flavorings.
Are peanuts gluten-free?
Peanuts are considered a naturally gluten-free food, as there is no gluten in peanut plants by nature. For the most part, peanuts are safe to eat on a gluten-free diet IF it is clear that the peanuts you’re enjoying have been produced in a facility and on machinery that doesn’t also manufacture gluten-containing grains.
Raw and roasted peanuts can be considered gluten-free if they are plain. Like any other foods, once other ingredients are added, you’ll need to do your due diligence reviewing ingredients and processes for how that food is handled and if gluten is introduced into the process anywhere along the way.

Is peanut butter gluten-free?
Peanut butter in its most natural form is always gluten-free. Most store-bought peanut butter is gluten-free as it contains nothing more than peanuts and oil.
Some brands of peanut butter may contain gluten from cross contamination in a facility where wheat products are also processed. Look for a gluten-free label if you don’t feel confident in the brand that you’re purchasing.

Shouldn’t all peanut butter products be gluten-free?
In theory, all peanut butter should be gluten-free because there aren’t any grain products added to this food.
However, many brands aren’t labeled gluten-free, because they are manufactured in the same facility or on the same equipment as other foods that contain gluten. For this reason, cross contamination is likely in some peanut butter products.
Another reason you might not see a gluten-free label on all peanut butter products is that it costs money to be able to get certified as a gluten-free product to share with certainty that a product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten.
Many brands may not want to take that added expense knowing that the ingredient list will provide most shoppers with what they need to know.
If you know for certain that you can’t tolerate trace amounts of gluten in your diet due to your level of sensitivity, it’s a wise idea to look for a gluten-free label before buying any peanut butter.

Peanut butter brands with no gluten ingredients
Some brands of peanut butter aren’t considered gluten-free by the manufacturer, but do not have any gluten ingredients. This may be due to potential cross contamination at the facility or a manufacturer not wanting to spend the time or money to test their products.
In this case, you’ll want to use your best judgment based on what you know about you and your body’s sensitivity level to gluten to determine if one of these brands will work for you.
