Did you know that snacking throughout the day is a healthy way to curb cravings, keep your blood sugar stable, and keep your moods balanced?
But when you don’t eat gluten and dairy like me, finding go-to snacks isn’t always easy. Especially if you find yourself on-the-go or in the car a lot. These days, I’m always on the go, between trips to the library for toddler story time, visits to Grandma’s house, the grocery store, or just running odd errands during the week.
While many people can grab any run-of-the-mill snack food, we GFDF folks have to do a little more work when it comes to finding snacks that will keep us on track with our lifestyle. When I don’t have time to sit down for a snack at home, I make sure I have gluten and dairy-free options at-the-ready so that I’m not tempted to stop by a convenience store or drive-through. It seems ten times harder to find things that work with my diet and lifestyle when I’m out and about.
My go-to plan is to tuck away a few snacks for those just-in-case emergencies. I usually have a snack available in my purse, in my glovebox, in my trunk, and I even make sure there’s one or two options in my son’s diaper bag (that either of us can enjoy when we need them).
These are 10 of my favorite gluten-free dairy-free snacks to keep in my car for those in-a-pinch I-can’t-wait-til-I-get-home moments:
- Homemade snack mixes with your favorite dried fruits, nuts and seeds, rice cereal, gluten-free pretzels or dairy-free chocolate chips
- Fruit leather
- So Delicious chocolate coconut milk single servings
- Sunflower seeds or almonds
- Justin’s peanut butter or almond butter pouches
- Sahale nut mixes
- Gluten-free pretzels
- Rice crackers or rice cakes or other gluten-free crackers
- Larabar or Kind Bars
- Gluten-free granola (bought or homemade)
When you’re on the go or in the car a lot, maintaining your gluten-free dairy-free lifestyle is possible by being prepared with some great snack options. That’s really the biggest trick to staying on track – being prepared.
Take a few of these ideas and make a few stashes for your car and purse so you never find yourself in a (hunger) pinch again.
